Microsoft HoloLens release date, price news: Summer 2015 launch expected, but won't be cheap
Microsoft is expected to release its highly anticipated augmented reality headset, the HoloLens, this summer, and is reported to burn a hole in the pocket of those interested to buy.
According to BGR.com, Microsoft HoloLens does not have an official release date yet, but the tech giant said during the Build Conference this week that its advanced holographic platform will go on sale this summer.
The Microsoft HoloLens will particularly be available once the Window 10 is released this summer. Window 10 also does not have a definite release date.
As for the price, The New York Times reported that the Microsoft HoloLens "will be fare more expensive than smartphones," whose production costs are subsidized by wireless carriers.
The same New York Times report also quoted an unnamed Microsoft executive that the augmented reality headset will "cost significantly more than a game console, which runs more than $400."
Microsoft describes the HoloLens as "the world's most advanced holographic computing platform, enabled by Windows 10."
The augmented reality headset is espected to bring "high-definition holograms" to users, which they can integrate to physical places, spaces, and things.
Microsoft first made an announcement about the HoloLens back in 2012, when media outlets were given samples of the headset's early development kit.
The Microsoft HoloLens is expected to feature a advanced display technology that creates virtual images on lenses right in front of the user's eyes.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the HoloLens is very much in the works at present, but is cautious of promoting it.
"I don't want to overhype it like Google Glass and say this is the next. I want us to be deliberate about what it is," Nadella said in a BGR.com report.
