Bosch paintings news: Classic pieces on exhibit 500 years after artist's death
Classic masterpieces of Netherlandish painter Jeroen Anthonissen van Aken, more popularly known as Hieronymus Bosch, are now being exhibited at Het Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenibosch (the painter's home city). In celebration of the painter's 500th death anniversary, majority of his artwork were collected from various museums and art collectors to give honor to the late artist.
Art enthusiasts can revel in 20 out of his 25 original paintings being displayed in the exhibit. These antique pieces came from other museums, monasteries, churches, royal and ducal palaces. The museums that loaned the original artworks are the Museo Nacional del Prado Madrid, the Musee de Louvre in Paris, the Accademia in Venice, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
Museum Director Charles de Mooij said, "Hieronymus Bosch is the most important and most original medieval artist our country has ever produced. It is long-cherished ambition to get the vast majority of his works back to his hometown in 2016. And a great opportunity for a new generation to get acquainted with this work, which is unique in every respect."
The exhibit is an avenue for visitors to learn and appreciate Bosch's creativity and his radical imagination of bestiary and religious subjects. Some of his grandiose works were named Hell, The Last Judgment, The Garden of Earthly Delights, Hermit Saints, Concert in the Egg, The Seven Deadly Sins, and The Temptation of St. Anthony.
The Bosch Research and Conservation Project (BRCP) team of experts conducted a comprehensive and in-depth examination and documentation of the masterpieces gathered worldwide using modern technology for the past six years. This international team was led by Jos Koldeweij and Matthijs Ilsink has, and they took charge of the restoration of Bosch' works.
The grand exhibit started on Feb. 13 and will end on May 8. In May, the Museo Nacional del Prado will host the same exhibit in Madrid.
