After months of waiting, owners of HTC One M8 phones can now update their devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop, the latest version of the mobile operating system developed by Google.

According to a report posted on TechTimes.com, HTC vice president of product management Mo Versi announced on Twitter that users HTC One M8 phones who are also T-Mobile network subscribers can get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update starting February 9.

Last February 6, Sprint customers also started receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on their HTC One M8 phones, HTC's flagship smartphone.

HTC, a Taiwanese smartphone maker, actually missed its self-imposed deadline of releasing the latest version of the Google-developed operating system last February 1.

Aside from HTC One M8 phones, unlocked editions of the HTC One M7 mobile devices can also now be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Google unveiled Android 5.0 Lollipop in June last year. In the latest version of the software, users can access notifications, which are now displayed within applications as top-of-the-screen banners, even when the screen is locked.

The newest version of the Android mobile operating system was also redesigned using a language called "material design."

A Business Insider report said the Android 5.0 Lollipop update requires a lot of time before it can be launched on a broad scale, and takes months before it can reach smartphones because each phone manufacturer needs to modify the software.

In fact, only 1.6 percent of all active Android devices have received the software update, despite the fact that Lollipop has been around for months now.
