'Taboo' mini-series update: First official trailer released featuring Tom Hardy

FX released the first trailer of its much anticipated eight-part miniseries, "Taboo," featuring award-winning and 2016 Oscar nominee Tom Hardy. 

The British-American miniseries is about an adventurer who comes back to Britain, seemingly from the dead, to avenge the death of his father and his mother's destroyed sanity. 

The trailer, released on Feb. 26, is dark and intriguing. Hardy's character, James Keziah Delaney, comes back to London from Africa with ill-gotten diamonds to inherit what little is left of his family's fortune from his father's shipping empire, only to return to a crazed mother, threats and lies. Set in 1814, Delaney is faced against the East India Company and is in the middle of a war between Britain and America. 

Writer Steven Knight, in the report by the Telegraph, described the story line. He said that Hardy's character "will be against the East India Company which, throughout the 19th century, was the equivalent of the CIA, the NSA, and the biggest, baddest multinational corporation on earth."

This statement raised some eyebrows from historians regarding their portrayal of the East India Company, showing it in a negative light. 

Written by Knight based on the original story co-written by Hardy with his father Chips Hardy, who acts as consulting producer of the show, it will consist of eight hour-long episodes. Joining Hardy in the cast are Michael Kelly, Jonathan Pryce, Oona Chaplin and David Hayman, among others. Production started filming in November 2015.

"Taboo" is produced by Hardy, Knight and Ridley Scott, and will have its premiere on BBC in the U.K. and on FX in the U.S. in 2017.
