Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Box Office News Update: Film Breaks Box Office Records
Erotic romance drama film "Fifty Shades of Grey" has been breaking box office records over the weekend, earning some $81.67 million during the past three days.
This figure makes the movie adaptation of E.L. James' hit novel, which hit the theaters last Friday, as the highest earning movie ever shown on a Presidents' Day opening weekend, according to an article posted on the Time Magazine website.
Second player "Kingsman: The Secret Service" didn't do badly either only earned $35.6 over three days.
The controversial romance drama, however, is expected to rake up some more money in the coming days. It is projected to earn some $90.658 million during its first four days of showing at 3,646 playdates.
The erotic film's record-breaking earnings is twice as much as its production cost. Based on the estimate on BoxOfficeMojo.com, "Fifty Shades of Grey" on took some $40 million to be produced.
Quite interestingly, the website Deadline.com reported that "Fifty Shades of Grey" almost broke the record earlier set by religious film "Passion of the Christ," which still has the highest earnings for an R-Rated tim at $83.8 million.
In terms of demographics, Deadline.com said more women are watching "Fifty Shades of Grey" compared to men. On its first night, 82 percent of the audience were girls. The same trend continued on Valentine's day, when 68 percent of those watched the movie were women.
Younger people also tended to watch the film, with 59 percent of the audience below 30 years old.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" tells the story of literary student Anastasia Steele, played by Dakota Johnson, who enters into a sadomasochistic relationship with young businessman Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan.
