'Doctor Who' season 10 news: Idris Elba should be next Doctor, Maisie Williams says
"Game of Thrones" actress Maisie Williams, who appeared in several "Doctor Who" episodes alongside the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, thinks that the next actor to take on the role should be a black one, and that she's rooting for "Beasts of No Nation" actor Idris Elba to be the next Doctor.
The actress, who played the recurring role of Ashildr in the ninth season of British sci-fi series "Doctor Who," told the Evening Standard: "I think a black doctor would be incredible. I'm all for Idris Elba – but if not I'll take it for the team and do it!'
Speaking from the Evening Standard British Film Awards on Sunday, the 18-year-old actress said that it would be "cool" to be the Thirteenth Doctor but that her schedule may not accommodate it.
"Yes it would be cool but right now I'm locked into some other things," she said. "I think a female doctor would be incredible."
Meanwhile, after Jenna Coleman's (Clara Oswald) exit from the cult-favorite series, "Doctor Who" is reportedly searching for someone to take her place as the Doctor's companion.
Speaking to RadioTimes at the website's Covers Party, Capaldi said, "We've just had some brief talks about it, we haven't actually chosen someone yet — that I know of."
"So we're looking for someone different," he teased, lingering on the last word.
According to Radio Times, "Doctor Who" will begin filming its next season in May. The 10th season will reportedly consist of at least 12 episodes and will be aired in spring of 2017. Before that, the show will return late this year with its annual Christmas special broadcast.
In January, Steven Moffat, the program's executive producer and head writer since 2010, announced that he will be stepping down after the show's 10th run. "Broadchurch" creator Chris Chibnall will take over Moffat's role in 2018.
