'Deadpool 2' update: Sequel already in the making, 'Deadpool' writers to pen follow-up film
"Deadpool" opened just last weekend but writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are returning to pen the script for "Deadpool 2." Even before the screening of the hit movie, there were already some hints of a follow-up film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, during the production of "Deadpool," 20th Century Fox already had a sequel in the works. Wernick and Reese, also the executive producers of the movie, were already given a go-signal for the upcoming "Deadpool 2." They are also known for their works on "Zombieland" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation."
In an exclusive interview with director Tim Miller by Empire last year, the sequel was already mentioned, suggesting it was an idea all along. He said, "There aren't really many definitive 'Deadpool' villains, apart from Cable. If we don't put Cable in 'Deadpool 2' I think we'll be run out of town on a rail."
Filmed for $58 million, Fox already gathered around $135 million on the first three days of "Deadpool" in theaters, according to Box Office Mojo, breaking a blockbuster record. So while there hasn't been any signing to the sequel yet, Fox reportedly has plans to keep the creative team of the movie together.
Unlike any other superhero movies, "Deadpool" revived other R-rated comic book movies such as "Kick-Ass," "Watchmen," and "The Punisher." And Ryan Reynolds, the star of the movie, is given credit for it.
"This is like his Iron Man," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore via Variety. "Just as Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man personified, you couldn't have cast an actor more perfectly as Deadpool."
In an interview with German outlet FILMSTARTS, Reynolds said that Deadpool is like an alter ego for him, saying, "I relate to him. I feel like we're mirror images of each other."
With regard to integrating Deadpool into other Marvel films like "The Avengers" and "X-Men," he said, "In the future, if we're doing a bunch more Deadpool movies, we're really going to explore the 'X-Men' a lot. We'll see. And maybe X-Force — X-Force is my priority. I really want to get that in."
