'Bates Motel' season 4 spoilers: Norman transforms into Norma
"Bates Motel" is set to return to the small screen in less than a month and A&E has already released a teaser, giving fans a first look of the upcoming season. It seems like the Norman viewers first met is slowly evolving into the Norman of "Psycho."
The previous season already showed viewers signs that Norman is taking the plunge to insanity. For one, he has started to dress up like his mother, Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga), in the last episode of the third season. However, his continued flout against her would only prove that his illness is far off from anyone expected.
Freddie Highmore, who plays Norman, told Entertainment Weekly that the Norman-as-Norma persona seems like a whole new character.
He said, "It's very much this mix of how Norma saw his mother almost every single day bustle around the kitchen making breakfast. What would Norman have taken away from that experience every day throughout his life? It isn't necessarily a mimicking of Norma, but of Norman's version of her that he holds in his mind."
On the other hand, during an interview with The Observer last year, Farmiga shared that her character has become more aware of Norman's malady.
She revealed, "Norma is more aware, she's more circumspect ... I think she's at a point where she's as protective of him as ever and determined to help him as best as she can, but she doesn't always know how."
According to TVLine, Norma will be seeking medical assistance for her son. Along the way, she will meet Dr. Gregg Edward who is rumored to play her love interest in the upcoming season. However, International Business Times has also hinted that Norma's relationship with Sheriff Romero may deepen further.
"Bates Motel" will return for a new season this March 7 on A&E.
