The highly-anticipated Android Lollipop 5.1 update.

Users of the Sony's premiere smartphone, Xperia Z3, have been eagerly awaiting the upgrade to Android's most recent operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop.

When exactly will the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade for Sony Xperia Z3 be released?

In October last year, the Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation added the Android 5.0 Lollipop as its next major Android version, particularly for the Xperia ZR and other Xperia Z devices.

The Sony devices eligible for the Android 5.0 Lollipop update include the Xperia ZR3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z, Xperia z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet.

According to a report posted on the website of Android Central, Sony Electronics chief operations officer Michael Fasulo confirmed at a press conference during the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 last January that his company's Xperia Z3 lineup will get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update starting February.

Sony, however, has not yet made any official announcements as to the exact date of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Sony Xperia Z3. It also has not yet said why Fasulo's earlier announcement was not followed.

Google unveiled Android 5.0 Lollipop in June last year. In the latest version of the software, users can access notifications, which are now displayed within applications as top-of-the-screen banners, even when the screen is locked.

The newest version of the Android mobile operating system was also redesigned using a language called "material design."

A Business Insider report said the Android 5.0 Lollipop update requires a lot of time before it can be launched on a broad scale, and takes months before it can reach smartphones because each phone manufacturer needs to modify the software.
