'12 Monkeys' Season 2 renewed or canceled? Sci-fi series new season coming 2016

The time-traveling science fiction drama, "12 Monkeys," has been renewed for a second season, cable network Syfy announced this week.

According to a report on TVLine.com, Syfy has greenlit Season 2 of the pre-and-post-apocalyptic thriller, which will air some time in 2016.

A separate article by The Hollywood Reporter said the second season of "12 Monkeys" will be handled by new show runners.

Current executive producers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who also developed the concept of "12 Monkeys," will now take over the helm of the sci-fi show.

Matalas and Fickett will replace current show runner Natalie Chaldez, who will step down to take charge of a new Syfy drama, hunters, which she also wrote.

Two other "12 Monkeys" executive producers, Richard Suckle and Charles Roven, will hold on to their current positions for the new season.

The second season of the Syfy show will also a fan-favorite recurring cast member as a series regular: Emily Hampshire, who plays the Jennifer Goines, a math genius who was locked in a psych ward.

Syfy president Dave Howe said the cable network is "committed' to 12 Monkeys, citing the "outstanding critical and audience praise" received by the series so far.

"The talent both on- and offscreen has delivered a series that has us all on the edge of our seats, providing exactly the smart, exciting storytelling Syfy is known for," Howe was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying.

The announcement for the second season came as the show winds up its first season. "12 Monkeys" stars Aaron Stanford as James Cole, a man who goes back in time to stop a deadly virus from wiping out the human race.
