Nicki Minaj calls her teen abortion a 'terrible mistake' in MTV documentary
NEW YORK (Christian Examiner) -- Nicki Minaj opened up in her new MTV documentary "My Time Again," revealing how her painful abortion at 15 affected her and how it was a "terrible mistake." The Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist also talked about motherhood and balancing her personal life with her career.
The "Only" rapper got personal during her documentary while visiting her hometown of Queens, N.Y. She was only 15 when she became pregnant with a baby girl, and she even named her Caiah.
"My child with Aaron would've been 16 any minute," said Minaj, 32.
The rapper, whose real name is Onika Maraj, said that she chose abortion because she felt she wouldn't be able to succeed with a child, but admitted that it was a "terrible mistake."
"We made a terrible mistake. We had to pay for it. I always felt like my destiny was to be accomplished in my career first," she explained.
Now that she has publically and painfully split from longtime boyfriend Safaree Samuels -- they have attacked each other on Twitter and grievances have been aired out for fans to see -- Minaj says that motherhood is something she wants but "won't be doing right now."
"I think four years from now is the time to have a child, I would have to be married first," the rapper said. "I think there is a housewife somewhere in there."
Minaj just released another successful album in December, The Pinkprint, which debuted at no. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and sold 244,000 copies in its first week. However, the music artist now believes that family is more important than money, and has moved back to the East Coast so she can visit her brother and grandmother more often.
"I don't know if the secret to life is to find love, but I think the secret is to embody love," she said, adding that she's no longer putting her "career over the ones that I love."
