Will Smith new movies 2015 news: 'Focus' box office topples '50 Shades Of Grey', hits No.1
"Focus," an romantic dark comedy film starring Will Smith, has toppled controversial movie "Fifty Shades of Grey" from the top of the box office charts this weekend.
The movie, directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra of "Crazy, Stupid, Love" fame, earned $19.1 million dollars, according to Box Office Mojo.
The spy action comedy film "Kingsman: The Secret Service," which stars Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson, was in second place, raking up some $11.8 million in the box office.
In close third place with $11.2 million in box office earnings is "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of the Water," the live action adaptation of the popular cartoons.
Erotic romantic drama "Fifty Shades of Grey" fell to fourth place after ruling the box office for the past weeks.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the controversial film was indeed expected to drop in the box office rankings this weekend, but the big fall signal the end of its days as a big box office earner.
The box office performance of "Focus," however, is still modest compared to Smith's past smash hits. For instance, in 2013, the actor's science fiction action adventure, "After Earth," debuted with $27.5 million.
Nevertheless, Warner Bros. executive Jeff Goldstein was satisfied with the box office earnings of "Focus."
"This is a mid-budgeted film with a result that matches," Goldstein said in an interview with The Huffington Post.
The Warner Bros. executive also said that the movie could have earned some $1 million to $2 million more, if not for winter storms.
"Focus" also stars Margot Robbie, B.D. Wong and Adrian Martinez.
