BOONE, N.C. (Christian Examiner) -- In a Monday Facebook post, Franklin Graham says liberals are imperiling the United States and this danger emanates from the White House and the Justice Department.

"One of the greatest threats to America is the progressives," he said, "led by President Obama and his Attorney General Eric Holder who are trying to impose a new morality—which is really no morality at all—jamming it down the throats of the American people."

RECENT CONTROVERSY WITH PROGRESSIVES

His comments about "progressives" comes just days after a small but vocal list of left-leaning evangelicals penned an open letter to him demanding satisfaction for a comment he made via Facebook on March 12 to "Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and everybody else" that "most police shootings can be avoided."

In that brief comment he urged individuals to show "respect for authority" and to obey police, whether "to stop" or to "put your hands in the air."

"It's as simple as that," he surmised, adding, "Even if you think the police officer is wrong—YOU OBEY."

Jim Wallis, a self-described progressive who is president and founder of Sojourners (an intentional "faith and social crisis" community started in the 1970s in response to the Vietnam War) and editor-in-chief of Sojourners magazine, is the lead signatory in an open letter that condemns Graham for being "crude, insensitive, and paternalistic" in his common sense advice.

The statement said Graham "oversimplified a complex and critical problem" and "minimized" the experiences of "people of color" who have "suffered under the weight of our broken justice system."

The open letter has been panned by conservatives and cheered by liberals.

PROGRESSIVES' PUSH TO LEAVE GOD

Meanwhile, in his March 23 Facebook entry, Graham attacked the progressive narrative as a push to move the country away from God.

"America has been blessed by God more than any nation on the face of this earth," he said. "When our country was birthed, its foundations and laws were based on biblical laws and principles.

"We used to be 'one nation under God,' now we're a nation that has turned its back on God," Graham offered. "History shows that when nations do this, their end is near."
